Staff Training
Staff Training Programs at Expanding Horizons
Anyone can be trained. Passion, on the other hand, is hard to find. At Expanding Horizons, we start by finding individuals with a passion for helping those in need. In addition to passion, our team members must possess a desire to continuously learn and grow. These two attributes are what allow us to deliver the best care possible.
We Pay Our Employees to Learn
Our team members don’t have to pay for training. Instead, we pay them to get trained. Their hard work toward learning new skills feeds directly into the quality of care they provide residents. And for that reason, we reward our employees by paying them for all those hours of training.
Expanding Horizons has a core set of classes every employee must complete. We also encourage team members to search for additional courses to broaden their skill sets.
Shadowing Program for New Employees
At Expanding Horizons, we lead by example. When a new employee comes on board, we invite them to participate in our shadowing program. This involves spending a day with one of our tenured team members. The new employee will get to see what a typical day is like at Expanding Horizons for their specific position.
The shadowing program is also a great opportunity for new and tenured employees to get to know one another. We pride ourselves on having a close-knit team where everyone is treated like family. Shadowing a fellow team member helps new employees feel welcome.
Mandated Courses and Certifications
As per DHS requirements, every employee at Expanding Horizons must achieve a specific set of certifications. We offer training for these certifications free of charge. In addition to those listed below, employees are welcome to pursue certifications not mandated by Expanding Horizons. Every course and certification they complete equals better care for our residents.
Expanding Horizons employees are required to attain the following certifications:
- Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention
- Mental Health Certification
- Medication Administration
- First Aid
- CPR
Our Commitment to Lifelong Learning
For us, learning isn’t a one-and-done thing. In addition to DHS requirements, we ask all our employees to pursue continuing education so they can keep their skills sharp for our residents. Ongoing professional development also allows them to keep up with advancements and new techniques in the medical field.
Every Expanding Horizons employee must complete a minimum of 20 training hours per year. However, they are encouraged to go beyond the 20-hour requirement in the interest of giving residents a better experience during their time in our adult group homes.
